The Friends of the Golden Gate Park Band will provide two full days of free band concerts for the public on June 11 and 12, 2011, from 11am to 5pm at their fifth annual Golden Gate Park Band Festival. This year’s festival entitled, “Concert Band Heaven in 2011!” will again take place at the historic Spreckels “Temple of Music” band shell on the beautiful Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park, located between the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences.
The following Northern California concert bands will perform on Saturday June 11: The San Jose Metropolitan Band, The Great Mother Lode Brass and Reed Band, The 59th Army Band, The Amador County Concert Band, The Sacramento Symphonic Winds and The San Ramon Symphonic Band. On Sunday June 12, The West County Winds, The Newark Symphonic Winds, The Golden Gate Park Band, The Brentwood Concert Band and The East Bay Symphonic Band will perform.
The featured band on Saturday will be the 59th Army Band from Sacramento, known as the “Governor’s Own”, this year celebrating its 150th anniversary!
Sunday’s featured band will be San Francisco’s world-famous, all-professional Golden Gate Park Band, now in its 129th year. The two days will be filled with a great variety of stirring band music encompassing marches, overtures, contemporary music, original band works, and popular classics. Band members Bill Aaron (saxophone) and Dan Norris (trumpet) will be featured soloists.
T-shirts commemorating this year’s festival will be on sale along with “Five Thousand Concerts in the Park”, a book about the history of the Golden Gate Park Band. For more information about the festival, go to http://www.friendsofggpband.org or www.goldengateparkband.org
