SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — June 27, 2009 – BoConcept San Francisco is pleased to present “Karma Chromatic!” featuring the recent works of Bay Area artist, Namita Kapoor.
In this latest group of work, Kapoor draws from her backgrounds as a South East Asian and American. "I use imagery from Indian myths, bollywood posters, and vintage commercial advertisements and abstract them with a variety of materials such as sari fabric and appliqué, henna prints, silkscreen and acrylic and oil paint.” Kapoor works her way in and around these various materials, infusing a dance between mediums that explodes off the canvas in a rhythm of brilliant colors. In these paintings, remnants of traditional Indian iconography contrasts with her expressionistic modern brush strokes, creating new environments for her dual cultures to co-exist, thematically and stylistically.
Aesthetically compelling and rich in spiritual content, Kapoor's paintings form unfinished narratives that allow a glimpse of epic Hindu tales and popular culture, leaving the viewer curious as to their original context. "I grew up with the stories of the Mahabharata, attended extravagant Indian weddings and watched bollywood films but managed to live a completely separate life as an American in a predominantly white suburban neighborhood. As I developed as an artist, I discovered I could explore these spiritual images of my heritage through painting directly, and connect them to my American culture." This show features Kapoor’s large paintings alongside smaller works.
Namita Kapoor received her BA from the University of California Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including New York, Chicago, India, China and Reykjavik, Iceland. Her work has been shown throughout the Bay Area, including Michael Rosenthal Gallery, Diego Rivera Gallery, Bedford Gallery, ProArts, Axis Gallery and the Soma Arts Cultural Center.
