Achy Obejas is a critically-acclaimed novelist, an award-winning journalist, a poet and a translator. Her most recent novel, Ruins, follows Usnavy, a beleaguered hero in Havana, Cuba during the “Special Period” in the 1990s after the Soviet Union’s collapse and the tightening of U.S. sanctions.
