The Fourth annual rendition of the International AMbient INDUSTrial Musicfest returns one again Nov 10th thru 12th at the Lab (2948 16th st. @ Mission) being the only music festival dedicated to hosting performances in the octophonic surround sound format with between 6 to 8 different artists performing each night for three nights in a row during the 2nd weekend of November with doors opening at 8pm each night.
Our lineup of guests for Thursday 11/10 ensues appropriately with an artist From Houston who has supported Iamindust with all he's had since its inception in 2008 and shortly thereafter I found out he was performing his own gigs as Night At Noon and thus he's been a welcome and intriguing addition to the melee as of last year so I guess this isd N.A.N.'s 'sophomore year at Iamindust and so he has graduated from playing in Stereo last year to playing his first ever Octophonic set this year. It may not sound like much in terms of hyperbole but I myself am sort of facing the same challenge and it is Daunting lemme tellya...N ext up we have our very own favorite kid's cereal promulagated relentlessly every Sat. morn by extraterrestrial interlopers! Yes its two aliens in their own right `Walter Funk and Lemmy of Kwisp perform yet another mind-bending Octophonic set to be followed by local Comedically- inclined Industrial music performer Headboggle (the concept alone is quite hilarious!) Next we have Nerfbau: a San Francisco based duo that lit their last audience on FIRE...by rubbing two balloons together! Rubber-o-Cement is maybe the most bizarre entry on the roster but all I have to go by is the only show I saw them perform way back in '99. as a prelude and a backdrop to their set they built to scale an entire City complete with lit windows in the office buildings. And wrapping up Thursday nights TESTivities from New Orleans a new collaboration in Shrapnihil is in the offing and perhaps to augur portents and possible outcomes for us all, Miss-'Oh!' will perform a Divination Ritual during the course of their performance. And ultimately the regular sets wrap up with the appearance a special undisclosed "Mystery Guest"...whom afterwards will promptly join the Rest of the Bill of performers onstage for an Iamindust tradition:
Live Improvised collaborations between Everyone simultaneously for as long as time allows before the event ends. A ll this on just our first night Thursday 11/10!
San Francisco Space Rock Veteran Helios Creed appearing as Chrome will perform an Octophonic rendition of the classic 1979 Chrome LP "Read Only Memory" in it's entirety for Thursday's headlining act. Chrome is normally a four-piece 'straight-off into outer space' quartet but this performance will be rendered in octo by Helios performing alone making his appearance at Iamindust that much more spatial. The evening Begins however with longtime SF Octophonic sound artist James Goode followed by a recently transplanted Zound maker from New Zealand known by some as "SCI-HI" This will be followed by the lone female performing artist at our festival and one we've been inviting to join our soiree since we began in 2008: Dark Muse blesses us with a return to the stage right before t hose 'Rusted Shut" refugees from Houston the Future Blondes show us how they've come all the way down here just to blow our minds. Next we have a something meant to chase Everyone off: a set of Gothic-infused country and western by Death Of The West (featuring Ure Thrall). Helios Creed's Chrome set follows next and again the night concludes with everyone joining hands with the Rest of the night's Bill of performers onstage for that hallowed Iamindust tradition: Singing "Cum-bay-ya...NO! er...manifesting aethereal l ive Improvised collaborations between Everyone simultaneously for as long as time allows before the event ends.
On Saturday 11/12 t he concluding evening of our fest will begin with the sonic sorcery of the tri-phonic trio Nux Vomica who've been a major force for good in the SF experimental music scene for longer than we can remember and has faithfully joined us for Iamindust every year. They'll be followed by the Deglet Noor Fakirs from Los angeles whom I imagine will provide a whole new interpretation of Octophonic Sound for us to consider. Longtime Industrial artist and sometime Sacramento Norcal Noisefest hosts Instagon will perform next. Followed by a fascinating collaboration between a member of Neurosis with Andre Acute in the group Nihil Communication. And that makes 3 Iamindust newcomers in a row playing this night's roster....yummy! T he closing portion of our Final night will see the return to the Iamindust stage of t he first artist I ever saw perform weird noise in San Frannie: Thomas Dimuzio. Followed by another happy return: this time of long time sound artists Illusion Of Safety coming all the way out here from Chicago to join our little party. Followed by Noisepsalm's 2nd swing at getting in on the act from Camoni CA.(they struck out with a broken bone before they even got to bat when they were scheduled for the 1st time in 2009) And the festival closes in a mighty raucous industrial strength fashion with one of My Favorite performers Cursed Chimera from Culver City Ca who Did manage to find his way to kicking ass mightily onstage back at IAMINDUST's 2009 rendition.
As a matter of fact, seeing how many of you out there may not be familiar with Cursed Chimera, Chrome, Illusion Of Safety or any of the above - you can get a good dose of their sounds now by checking out their performances on the 'I am in dust' youtube channel (or just type in the groups name in the youtube browser sillies!)
The performances will be accompanied by a host of phantasmagoric sound triggered lasers and organic lighting effects provided as the debut of a brand new design company Urban Light And Magick with each of the 8 speaker terminals of the octophonic surround array triggering a series of lasers and other sound-triggered lighting effects putting all those planeterium Pink Floyd Laser shows to shame. Video of what we do posted soon at the 'UrbanLightandMagic' youtube channel.
Roughly 85% of the performances at Iamindust will be in true Octophonic Surround sound. That's basically Stereo Times Four in layman's terms. One of the tertiary functions of the Iamindust Octophonic festival is to demonstrate just how limiting the stereophonic sound format is. Listening to music encoded in octophonic or 7.1 or even5.1 surround sound clearly provides a much more illuminating listening experience primarily because the 5 instruments don't have to all be expressed from the overloaded throat of just two speakers. In "real life" listening scenarios each instrument originates from its own unique source and thus can be heard as sounding clearly apart from the others. In the case of Surround sound pretty much the same thing applies as the instruments are allowed that space between each other in the listening area the true substance and depth of the playing performance reveals notes passages even whole phrases that one could never hear before because they were obscured by either the guitar the keyboards or heavens forbid; the Voice! As a result of all these vast differences (as well as the placement of 6 speakers in a wide expanding radius front to the side and behind you) your mouth will drop open in mute shock as you discover numerous previously obscured musical vistas revealed to you Each Time You Listen To An Album You Only Thought You Knew By Heart. It's a little-known fact that Pink Floyd recorded the original masters for "DARK Side Of The MOON", "ANIMALS" and "WISH You Were HERE" in Quadrophonic. What lies hidden in the Other two channels of music that the music industry didn't want you gettin turned on to? Surround Sound Suppliers is dedicated to finding out and then sharing this one shocking truths with the rest of the world...You aren't experiencing the true power of your music anywhere near as much as you should be/could be/WOULD be enjoying it with the methods technology and assistance now available Only from Surround Sound Suppliers or as I like to shorten it to 'S3'
Finally the event itself is a collaboration between something relatively old: the legendary performance space "The LAB" (whose been a longtime supporter and encouragers of artists and composers challenging established conventions in all mediums of expression) and something completely new which is Us: T.E.N. which likely stands for Total Entertainment Networking a company that heads up several smaller industries like Urban Light and Magic and S3 and Diskorporeality Recordings and of course Iamindust Octophonic Experifest of 2011.
