Susanna Mälkki makes her SFS debut conducting the First Symphony of her famous countryman. Although less thoroughly nationalistic as Finlandia, the symphony presents Sibelius’s early attempt to harness western idioms while maintaining his uniquely Finnish voice. The much admired Cuban-American pianist Horacio Gutiérrez performs Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto, a work that presents classical elements of form and melody surrounded by modern harmonies and dissonances.

Inside Music, an informative talk free to ticketholders, begins one hour prior to concerts.
