Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in all its forms—mainly inattentive, mainly hyperactive/impulsive and combined—is the best-studied psychiatric disorder in children, especially with respect to medications. Researchers have shown both that ADHD symptoms often are highly responsive to a number of different types of medication and that the actual course of ADHD is relatively resistant to change, irrespective of treatment. Dr. Elliott will review the rationale for using medications, the range of treatments available and appropriate expectations for what medications can accomplish.
