MANIAC was conceptualized by writer Petra Royale Bibeau while cashed-out in a Lower East Side hostel in the summer of 2005 during a hiatus from California. Since then MANIAC has collaborated with various visual artists manifesting as a short-run, handmade art zine (Marginal) produced in Los Angeles and Oakland, and as an underground art dealer/writer working with strangers and friends in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland. MANIAC materialized as an alternative space housed in a defunct 1970s office suite in Downtown Oakland in the spring of 2008 and works with emerging artists to produce programs every 4-6 weeks with a focus on curation and narrative with the current, contemporary art world.
