The arts are alive on Tumblr (thank you, @Tumblr for no ads!), and the positive energy is high.
There are so many creative, awesome people that are using Tumblr in so many different ways. Some use it for professional reasons, and others for creative purposes. I've also see it used to power e-commerce sites, successful fashion blogs, and various other effective methods of communication in the web 2.0 era.
To bring together all of this positive energy in the vibrant San Francisco Tumblr community ( don't worry San Francisco, there's one for you, too! you can find that one here: http://www.bayareatumblrs.com/events/47928442/ ) Bay Area Tumblrs partnered with my favorite shoe company, Toms (haven't worn any other brand in the last three years), to host a creative, half-day shoe painting meetup!
For those of you who are not in the loop with the Tom's philanthrophy and mission:
"In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.
Why Shoes?
Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:
•A leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term physical and cognitive harm they cause.
•Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected.
•Many times children can't attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they don't go to school. If they don't receive an education, they don't have the opportunity to realize their potential."
So, let's make some shoes! To cover the cost of the shoes and all of the supplies needed to get them super cool, we are charging $60 for this event. However, you leave with your own pair of custom designed canvas shoes that are lightweight, comfy, and come along with the good karma of having been matched by a pair of new shoes to another person who is less-advantaged than many of us here .
See ya on the other side!
----
Note: I will be ordering 1/2 size - 1 size smaller than your usual US shoe size measurement. Toms will fit you snug when you first get them, but trust me...they stretch! If you have already been evangelized and love your Toms, just let me know which size you already prefer in the brand and that's what I'll get for you!
