and she said... is a dance-theater work based on women's poetry on love and war. It uses different vocabularies of dance and theater to accentuate the plurality of voices, nuances of styles, and differences in time and context. Bharatanatyam (a classical Indian dance form), spoken
word, and contemporary Tamil theater forms come together in this work.
and she said... engages with the various shades of love and conflict found in the works of poets as diverse as Pari magalir and Avvaiyar of the Sangam age, Aandal, Karaikkal Ammaiyar, and contemporary Tamil women poets like Salma and Suhirtarani. The work also uses lines of poetry from Adrienne Rich, Wislawa Szymborska and others.
