A Mile House was a stage coach stop where mail was delivered and where coaches stopped to exchange and rest their horses. A mile house was designated in terms of its location from the stage terminus in downtown San Francisco. As the “mile houses” were built, they got their designation from the distance the stage had traveled. As years went by and the road changed, such designations were meaningless, but the names didn’t change.
The 7 Mile House was established as one of the coach stops along the way from the Embarcadero in San Francisco to San Jose.
